Dear Nicole ,
My mother knew about Jewish Voice for Peace long before I did.
Come to think of it, she was a "Jewish voice for peace" long before JVP even existed.
For her, motherhood meant instilling a commitment to social justice in her children. Justice was her definition of a family value.
It's a lesson that has stuck with me my entire life: that part of being Jewish means opposing discrimination in all its forms.
So it shouldn't have surprised me to learn that we share a love of Jewish Voice for Peace's work. My mother has been a supporter for awhile now - donating, forwarding their email messages to me and to others, and taking action whenever asked. Now that I've become involved with JVP too, I'm convinced that my mother had the right idea.
In so many ways, the people behind JVP remind me of my mother. They are fearless in speaking up for others in Israel/Palestine who are under fire for their courage - like the Shministim, Ezra Nawi, and Mohammad Othman. They stand for uncompromising humanism at a time when mainstream Jewish discourse is dominated by fear mongering and tribalism. And they do it all with a tiny (and amazing) staff, and a big group of phenomenal activists. What I love most about my friends at JVP is that the more they are bullied, the firmer they stand.
Please join us. Make your own donation to support JVP's work this holiday. It's a gift you (and your mom) can be proud of!
Sincerely,
Naomi Klein
